Tomorrowland Secrets
- If you make your way to Tomorrowland from Fantasyland, you might be lucky enough to see a large shadow of Mickey Mouse’s face cast upon the ground. A light fixture near the Indy Speedway was designed with three round light fixtures in such a way that it casts a Mickey face shadow twice a day if the sun is bright. If your Orlando vacation bring
s you here at the right time, you could be one of the only people to get a picture of this Tomorrowland phenomenon (if you have no problems clearing throngs of people from the area for a picture, that is).
- Much of the magic of Tomorrowland’s Space Mountain exists because its effects were designed to be seen in the dark. Did you ever wonder what it would look like in the light? From time to time, the ride gets shut down because of a technical glitch and usually is back up and running in twenty to thirty minutes. If you see that it has been shut down, hurry over to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and jump onto that ride. Part of the journey takes you into Space Mountain, where you will be able to see the entire skeletal view of the ride in the light, while it is being worked on.
Tomorrowland “Must See” Rides & Shows
Space Mountain: This may very well be the most popular ride in the Magic Kingdom. Inside of the 180-foot-tall steel “mountain” that houses this ride, you will climb aboard a rocket ship roller coaster and go careening through space. Your vehicle will reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour on this exciting ride through the galaxy, zipping past shooting stars and whisking around giant chocolate chip asteroids as you climb and plunge through space. Because of the huge popularity of this Tomorrowland attraction, you are likely to encounter some of the longest lines you will see during your Orlando vacation, here. Therefore, I strongly recommend utilizing the FastPass option if you can get one before the theme park runs out of them.
Carousel of Progress: Much like the theme of the attraction itself, the Carousel of Progress has had quite a journey! Originally created by Walt Disney himself for the 1964 World’s Fair, it became a big hit when the attraction was placed inside California’s Disneyland theme park in 1967. Six years later, the Carousel of Progress was removed from Disneyland and placed inside of Tomorrowland at The Magic Kingdom, where it has remained an Orlando vacation favorite ever since. Guests seated in this 250 seat theater are treated to the story of the advances in technology during the twentieth century, as the entire room rotates to display six different scenes depicting different eras of an American family’s life, beginning in the early 1900’s. Updated in 1996, the final scene takes place during Christmas in the future, with the entire Audio-animatronic family playing a virtual reality game. Walt Disney World claims that this extremely popular Tomorrowland show has been seen by more people than any other theater show in the history of America!
Stitch’s Great Escape!: This attraction replaced the Alien Encounter show which was formerly housed in the building. People who have visited Tomorrowland during past Orlando vacations will know that this building was also the home of former attractions Mission to the Moon and Mission to Mars. The premise of this adventure, is that you and the rest of the audience are new recruits for an intergalactic security system. As new recruits, you will be responsible for transporting criminals via a new teleportation device. I won’t give away what happens during this “5-D” show (which has the appearance of being a ride), but it gets fairly wild and, to some, it can be quite scary. Being a relatively new attraction, Stitch’s Great Escape! can develop some incredibly long lines. Fortunately, a FastPass is available for this attraction. There seems to be some controversy surrounding this attraction; some people absolutely love it while others find it juvenile and disgusting. See it for yourself and you decide!
